We talk to hundreds of small businesses every day and the general consensus is that Google My Business (GMB) is "just a listing and all I have to do is verify it and fill out my information."  Initially, that sounds like it might be right, but how does Google pick your GMB to display over your many competitors?  Since Google never provides and information on this, the word often used is; ”relevance”

Relevance can mean how well the information on your site matches your GMB and other locations on the Internet (but only 67% of you still have a website – here’s an opportunity). Relevance can also mean whether you have all your information filled out, if photos are present, and if they are they added frequently. More questions include: What is your star rating? When was your last review? What is the activity to your GMB? Is there any inbound marketing? Google scores your GMB by using hundreds of factors.

We’ve been working with GMB for our customers since its inception, a half a decade ago, and have experience with thousands of accounts.  We know what changes cause an increase in traffic (which translates to stealing this from your competitors) and we make weekly changes to constantly improve this. We also call you several times a month for new content and information. We have determined that we can use Google's paid marketing network to further improve this.

Here are some simple statistics to help you understand how important your GMB is:

According to Google, businesses with photos see 35% more clicks to their website and 42% higher requests for driving directions in Google Maps.  This number goes up if new photos are regularly added.

  • There are roughly 40-60 billion searches happening on Google in the US each month
  • 91% of adults use search engines to find information
  • 46% of the searches are for local business services
  • 86% of people look up the location of a business on Google Maps
  • 72% of consumers that perform a local search visit a store within 5 miles
